Pump Selection Guide
8-step process from duty point to motor selection.
Read guide →Centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, submersible pumps, and chemical dosing pumps — specifications, selection parameters, and what matters most when comparing suppliers.
To specify a pump: (1) Duty point — design flow rate (m³/h or l/s) and total dynamic head (m); (2) Fluid properties — temperature, density, viscosity, pH, solids content; (3) NPSHa — available NPSH at the pump suction (must exceed NPSHr with 0.5 m safety margin); (4) Seal type — mechanical seal for most industrial applications; gland packing for abrasive slurries; (5) Material specification — cast iron for water; 316SS for mild chemicals; duplex or Hastelloy for aggressive service; (6) BEP — the selected impeller size should put the duty point within 80–110% of BEP flow.
The most common industrial pump type. Single impeller, back pull-out design, foot-mounted or close-coupled. EN ISO 2858 / ISO 5199 dimensional standards ensure interchangeability between manufacturers. Used for: water circulation, process cooling, washdown, general liquid transfer.
| Frame size (indicative) | Flow range (m³/h) | Head range (m) | Power range (kW) | Typical speed (RPM) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small (32-160 to 50-200) | 5–40 | 10–80 | 0.75–7.5 | 2,900 or 1,450 |
| Medium (65-200 to 100-250) | 20–150 | 15–100 | 4–37 | 2,900 or 1,450 |
| Large (150-315 to 200-400) | 100–800 | 20–120 | 22–200 | 1,450 or 980 |
Axially split or radially split casing allows impeller access without disconnecting pipework. Higher flow rates, excellent efficiency at design point, lower NPSH than equivalent end-suction. Used for: large water supply, cooling towers, fire fighting systems, irrigation. Flow range: 100–10,000+ m³/h. Head: 20–200 m. Horizontal or vertical orientation.
Multiple impellers in series — each stage adds pressure. Used where high head is required with moderate flow. Applications: boiler feed water, high-rise building water supply, reverse osmosis feed, pressure washing. Head range: 50–500+ m. Flow: 5–500 m³/h depending on configuration.
| Pump type | Flow range | Pressure range | Viscosity capability | Best application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gear pump (internal/external) | 0.1–200 m³/h | Up to 25 bar | Up to 100,000 cSt | Hydraulic oil, fuel oil, high-viscosity chemicals, chocolate |
| Screw pump (twin/triple screw) | 1–500 m³/h | Up to 40 bar | Up to 50,000 cSt | Fuel oil transfer, crude oil, lubrication systems, offshore |
| Peristaltic (hose/tube) pump | 0.001–50 m³/h | Up to 16 bar | High viscosity and abrasives | Chemical dosing, slurries, blood, food, metering |
| Diaphragm pump (pneumatic AODD) | 0.1–80 m³/h | Up to 8 bar | Wide range including slurries | Drum unloading, chemical transfer, sump emptying, hazardous fluids |
| Progressive cavity (mono) pump | 0.1–200 m³/h | Up to 48 bar | Very high viscosity; abrasives; solids | Sludge, food products, drilling mud, dosing |
| Piston/plunger pump | 0.001–5 m³/h | Up to 10,000 bar | Low-medium viscosity | High-pressure water jetting, descaling, chemical injection |
Motor and pump assembly operate submerged — eliminates suction lift limitations. Used for: sump drainage, effluent transfer, borehole water extraction, flood control. Key selection parameters:
